Smile with your eyes, and other invaluable advice

So you know when Tyra tells the girls that they need to smile with their eyes, or be FIERCCCCE and you kind of watch and nod, and then go back to doing whatever it is you were doing because you know that Tyra is never going to find a seriously good model – and if she does, she won’t hang onto her – and anyway all these girls are 5 foot 7 or under which is just craziness, and Tyra is obviously insane now that she has started using “smize” as a verb. (Smile with your eyes, geddit?)

So when she gets on her versatility rants – “I like her but she needs to be able to do catalogue AND high fashion AND beauty AND commercial and I’m just not sure she’s shaping up” – I kind of switch off and categorise it under “crazy Tyra” and only zone back in again when Miss Jay is doing something crazy or one of the girls decides to talk back to Nigel. Nigel’s the bad-ass, you know; the rest of them say mean things but don’t mean them. Nigel, on the other hand, is ANGRY deep down to his core. But I digress.

The point I’m trying to get to here is versatility – something that Tyra had led me to believe was an untruth, a falsity, an unattainable ideal. Until I saw the following photographs, of Natasha Poly, for Muse magazine.
