Girl, you’ll be a woman soon
And things just don’t get any easier. I keep planning to post my thesis here, which I did on how women conspire to oppress women in fashion magazines (thrilling I’m sure), and then I get bogged down in realising that would take hours, especially to sort out images . . . Someone asked me the other day if I think there is still inequality in the world, and the answer to that is yes, definitely. You’d have to be blind not to see it, and I won’t stand for any of this “would you just shut up and get on with it, don’t you have the right to vote” bullshit. Yes, I’ve had that said to me.
Also, Glamour magazine this month (which I usually quite like, more for the fashion than for anything else) has a section wherein men answer YOUR questions! I didn’t have any questions in the first place, but it’s nice that they assume I did. One of them is, “why do men like porn?” I’ll say firstly that is a huge question, one that cannot be answered in five lines. But the journalist tries. “Men like porn because men like women. Men like looking at women. Therefore men like looking at women having sex.” Whatever delusional person thinks that there is any correlation between how women have sex and pornography is a few braincells short of a hedgehog. Tell me PLEASE when was the last time you had sex with someone who acted like women do in porn films? Or, rather, when was the last time you had sex with someone who you felt you could treat the way men in porn treat women in porn? God, I’m tired of this world today.
In the meantime, if you want to be more depressed, check out the World Economic Forum’s study on the gender gap here.
Oh, and the next time someone in my life utters the immortal words “I’m not a feminist, but . . .” they can consider themselves cut. Glamour has another great section about cutting unwanted friends out of your life. No, I’m not bluffing. Try me.

Hear hear! (Or is it here, here? Hmmm, either makes a kind of logical sense. But I digress.) I am a feminist but nothing. Dying to read your thesis: please post!

I know, I know. I can’t understand how a woman would NOT
want to associate herself with feminism. Fear of people suspecting she doesn’t shave her legs? I have no truck with it. Even himself has declared himself a feminist – but quietly, in case the lads hear.

There’s a great although disturbing section in “On Beauty” by Zadie Smith where an older man has sex with a much younger woman where she basically acts out having sex in the manner in which she has received from pop culture that women have sex. It’s a really disturbing commentary on generational and gender differences and underlines exactly your point above about porn.
Have you seen the report released today by the Equality Authority about how there are fewer women in management roles?
