Just one of the reasons I love Jezebel
I love women’s magazines. I buy almost all of them – and I supplement my interest in women’s interest magazines (Marie Claire, Elle, Glamour) with purely fashion and art magazines (Vogue, Pop, Love, iD. . .). This month, I’ve had my ups and my downs with the magazines: Glamour‘s stance on porn, for example, or Marie Claire‘s myriad articles teaching women how to cover up their “flaws” – flaws like fat ankles, or arms that are only thin enough to fit bangles on your wrists. But Jezebel fairly sums up a lot of my problems with women’s magazines.
The article accompanying this amazing piece of graphic art is here, and points out the ridiculousness of the fact that US Glamour, despite being published in a country with a not insignificant black population, has featured a black woman on its cover only one month of the year – this month, when Michelle Obama, Rihanna, Amy Poehler, Maria Shriver and Serena Williams share the cover. One lady, depending on which copy you pick up. Surely any one of these women has a decent enough story to carry a whole magazine? And surely, if Rihanna is granting an interview, an entire issue dedicated to women’s safety might not be the worst idea in the world? But then again, what do I know? Jessica Simpson had a movie to promote, for crying out loud! Oh, then again . . . no, she didn’t.
