THAT sequined Topshop dress

Do you remember the post I wrote about the Topshop sequined dress I bought online? Well, I guess now you do (links are so amazing, right?). Well it arrived the other day to the office, where we all oohed and aahed and crooned over it, felt how delightfully heavy it was (substantial, one might say), how beautiful the colours and sequins were, debated how many wears you’d get out of it before everyone in Ireland had seen and recognised it (verdict? Four, max) and discussed whether or not it was too much for the work Christmas party. That last question was irrelevant in any case, as the weather and my New York plans conspired against my Christmas party plan and left me marooned at home. But anyway . . .

The dress didn’t fit. This is always the heartache of buying online. But my issue here is not that the dress didn’t fit in a “oh it’s just not made for boobs” or “it’s a bit short” or “the sleeves are a bit tight” (take note to that last issue, H&M) but it didn’t go down over my ass. I am a size 14 in Topshop, I’m a size 12-14 in French Connection, I’m a 16 in H&M (trousers and skirts), a 14-16 in DVF, a 12-14 in Warehouse . . . you get my drift. I own a lot of things from Topshop. They are all a size 14, bar one floral dress that I wanted large, so bought in a 16 and now rarely wear since a friend told me it makes me look enormous. Life is tough. But this all leads me to conclude that this was an anomaly of bad sizing. Now I have to bring it back to the Stephen’s Green store (the only one that stocks Boutique), or pay about 20 euro to have it shipped back to Topshop HQ, given its heft.

Surely there should be some free return postage procedure if the problem with the garment is entirely Topshop’s? In any case, no dress for me, which is probably a good thing as, at 150 sterling for four wears, it hardly screams good value.

I thought Topshop online returns have free postage. I’ve never had a problem sending stuff back without paying for it, just using the sticky label they send you….well alright there were a few arguments with the post mistress but once you get past her it always gets back ok & the money ends up back in my account. But just now I went to look at the returns page and it isn’t very clear about whether Ireland is included in the free post so now I’m slightly confused and not sure how I became so convinced that we were entitled to freepost!

But yeah, Clothes not fitting properly is theonly downfall to online shopping but its a big downfall! Hope you can get the next size up.

Oh gutted. That is incredibly unfair, is the fact that it is boutique that it is the wrong size? Not that that’s the point of course.
I very rarely buy on line, but the size thing isn’t what puts me off. It’s the fact that you can’t beat the instant rush of buying something and having it there and then, you know?
