Happily insignificant

Sometimes you see images, or read stories, that make you realise how insignificant you are, in the grand scheme of things. These moments usually come as some sort of relief and, in my case, usually come at exactly the right moment.

From NASA’s Flickr photostream, the most detailed true-colour image, to date, of planet Earth. Mindblowing.

I pitched an idea for a piece the other day, to one of my editors at work, on where the remnants of the Celtic Tiger have gone. The €500 cocktail in the Westin Hotel; €10,000 Balmain jeans; a €50 bottle of water. Are the rich still consuming without an awareness of risk, or have they [...]

So today I’m taking a break from normal programming: getting my hair did, then driving down to Roscommon to see S, back up here tomorrow morning, then welcoming the sister back from the Americas before launching myself into more and more work. Busy busy. I’ll try to get to my Sunday inspiration [...]

Via OnceWed (I don’t know why I subscribe to a wedding blog, okay? It shows beautiful photography. BEAUTIFUL! And lovely, happy American people with very white teeth. I just like it. Stop hassling me!) comes this beautiful shoot, by Brandon Patoc, of a young couple in vintage styleeeee. While I feel like vintage wedding photographs [...]

The last time I wrote about The Sartorialist, a discussion broke out in the comments about whether or not he’s bringing anything new to the scene; whether or not he matters, and how his aesthetic might limit his own work.

I think it’s safe to say that this latest image will disabuse you all of that [...]

So Fred Lebain takes pictures of interesting scenes, then goes back weeks later, holds these poster-sized photographs up against “the real thing”, and photographs that. To me, this is a Baudrillard-like experiment: superimposing reality against reality to see which is the more real, which is the more false, where is Disneyworld? Perfect photography for a [...]

So, yes, I’m 16 again, but I have been dying for the release of New Moon ever since I saw Twilight. Disclaimer: when I saw the first film I was really hungover and had recently broken up with my then-boyfriend, so was in a state of heightened emotion. When the credits rolled I burst into [...]

So Natalie is rocking the shoulder action in the December issue of V magazine, shot by Mario Testino. I’m also loving her big hair, something that’s definitely close to my heart. I may be making a trip down to Eason’s on O’Connell St for my V mag fix – why oh why is it so [...]
