I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I have clear skin naturally, and I know that makes me one of the lucky ones. But I am prone to the occasional breakout – particularly around my jaw and (weirdly) milia on my cheekbones and around my eyes – and, if I don’t look after it, my skin gets dehydrated pretty quickly.
Lately, I’ve been loving my skin more than I have in a long time, so I thought I’d share a few details on the products I’m using and supplements I’m taking to make it so. We all know (cliché alert!) that beauty starts from within – and I definitely notice that what I’m ingesting has a huge effect on my skin. I’ve been talking Revive Active’s Beauty Complex since mid-June now and it’s become an essential part of my daily routine. Full disclosure: I’m not a scientist. I haven’t done a massive study of thousands of people to be able to say, definitively, whether or not Beauty Complex has changed my skin. But, from my experience, it has.
My skin is definitely more “glowy” (scientific term right there), and when I look at the pics above (taken eight weeks apart), I feel as if my complexion has really evened out. My forehead also looks smoother! (I do have a little scar from a mole I had removed a few years ago – always wear SPF and check your moles, kids!)
When I look at the ingredients list, the difference makes sense; Beauty Complex is the first product to combine collagen, hyaluronic acid and phytoceramides, which essentially lock water into your skin from the inside out. I know the gals at Revive Active recommend taking it an hour after food, as some people find these kinds of soluble sachets tough on the tummy, but I take mine first thing and it’s fine – it tastes like a kind of tropical fruit drink, which I like! I use the UFO Ultra-Clarifying oil about twice a week, only on my T-zone – I find it really good for clearing up buildup underneath the skin (I definitely feel like there are fewer bumps underneath the skin since I started using it) and clearing up the pores on and around my nose. I always use it at night-time, only because my skin is quite oily anyway and I don’t generally put extra oil on in the morning – by lunchtime I am super oily as it is!

A lot of the decisions I’ve made lately around skincare – including upping my skincare routine and trying really hard to cleanse, tone, moisturise morning and evening – have been down to following Caroline. I think I started paying proper attention to her once I turned 30 – you know, the crisis years for women (eyeroll).
I talked about this concentrate-slash-serum the other day on my Snapchat (@rosemarymaccabe), as one of the things I’d bought that I’d recommend (#ipaidforthis all over that), and I really would. It feels really lightweight on the skin and soaks in quickly – which is really important, I think, for any product you’re putting on under foundation. It doesn’t pill (you know the way some serums and moisturisers kind of gather beneath foundation and end up rolling off) and leaves my skin feeling really hydrated. The odd day, when I’m in a rush, I’ve just worn this as moisturiser alone and it’s done the job.
Good food – and lots of it
So here’s a really obvious one, but I notice a huge difference to my skin when I’m eating stuff that doesn’t agree with me. Over the past few years, I’ve really got a good sense of what does and doesn’t agree with me, food-wise. If I have a heavy weekend wherein I’m eating, say, a lot of carbs (usually pizza, sometimes my beloved Bombay Pantry), I will really notice it in my skin that coming week. I’ll get breakouts, especially around my jawline and, weirdly, on my scalp! My skin also gets a little dull and flat and just generally looks a bit crap.
So, 80% of the time, I try to follow a diet that’s high in green veg. I go through a bag of spinach every other day, and I also eat loads of broccoli, kale, asparagus, courgette, cucumber… all the good green stuff! I also eat a lot of chicken, turkey, bacon (my one true love), beef… and I try to eat fish at least twice a week, although I don’t always succeed because I’m not the biggest fish fan. (For those of you who missed it, I tried being vegetarian for three months but honestly, I was really bloated and sluggish… and I didn’t last.)
The other 20% of the time, I eat things that I really want to eat – because I just love them, or I’m feeling crappy and eating a brownie will temporarily make me feel better. I’m pretty unapologetic about that, but I just have to accept the consequences. So when I’m bloated and have a really spotty chin, I know exactly when I did it to myself!
I rarely wear makeup (sorry!)
I know this is the most annoying thing anyone could tell you to do, and supremely unhelpful if you’re someone who’s paranoid about their skin. Not wearing makeup can feel really daunting if you’ve got any kind of skin issues, but for me, it definitely makes a big difference. Again, like eating badly, if I have a few days where I’m doing TV, or I have a few different events, I’ll notice that my skin is duller and more dehydrated afterwards.
It helps that I’ve just started doing a course in personal training, so it’s pretty much leggings and T-shirts non-stop, and while I know a lot of personal trainers do wear makeup, it’s most definitely not mandatory (unlike most other jobs, where you’re expected to be pretty groomed). My style, in terms of both fashion and beauty, has got really really casual (more than ever before), and I really think my skin is feeling the benefits.
I know that wearing zero makeup isn’t going to be an option for everyone, but I would really recommend giving it a go every now and then – maybe just the days when you’re not at work. Also, on days when I do wear makeup, I take it off the second I get in the door – otherwise I feel weird like I’m wearing a foundation mask or something! My skin feels so much better when I cleanse all my makeup off (double cleanse, a la Caroline) when I get in.
