There are some jobs that will always stand out in your memory. Sometimes it’s because of the team you had working together; sometimes it’s because of the vision you were realising. Other times, it’s because of the result you got. This time, it was a combination of every factor involved – the perfect model in January Russell from Morgan The Agency, the perfect venue in the speakeasy-style Vintage Cocktail Club, the perfect and incredible photographer Eilish McCormick, the perfect hair and makeup from Empower Studio… everything.
The brief was to create a beautiful set of photographs using vintage clothes. Styling shoots in Ireland can sometimes be really difficult. Unlike in big magazines in the US and even in the UK, we don’t often get sample couture pieces to use (and ruin) as we see fit – though samples are sometimes available, they have to be shipped from the UK, and during sale times the perfect piece can be seriously difficult to find (bearing in mind that shoots are often two months ahead of publication date!).
With this in mind, vintage was the way to go, and I picked up a combination of items from 9 Crow St in Dublin, Miss Daisy Blue in Cork, the 3rd Policeman in Rathmines, Beaux Bows in Dublin and even charity shops in Dún Laoghaire (my favourite locale for charity-shop bargains) for bits and pieces here and there. All of the shoes are from Buffalo, due to January having slightly larger feet than her 1940s counterparts…
We ate Pieminister pies for lunch, shot to the smell of thousands of lemons being freshly squeezed in the bar and laughed our heads off more than once – and though there was a moment or two when things seemed to be falling apart (“is this dress a little too… sexy?” “Can we use real fur?”), it all turned out so, so beautifully.
